Le Morne

The La Prairie beach, located about 4 km east of Le Morne on the southwest coast of Mauritius, offers a vast and flat lagoon. It is a popular spot for its shallow water that is well-suited for kitesurfing.

The beach is spacious, making it easy to launch and land kites. Riders find a calm setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby Morne.

This site is part of the larger lagoon of Le Morne, with a relaxed atmosphere and conditions suitable for different levels.

Location

Detailed information

The La Prairie spot is the upwind part of the Le Morne lagoon, facing the prevailing winds from southeast, which come in onshore or side-on depending on the intensity. The water entry is directly from the sandy beach, wide and obstacle-free, with a comfortable launch area even in strong winds. The navigation area is immense, flat, and shallow for hundreds of meters, ideal for freeride, freestyle, or learning, without the need to leave the lagoon. Tides have little influence on the water surface which remains flat at all times, but at low tide, the water is even shallower, perfect for beginners who can stand for a long time. Be careful to stay in the clear areas and avoid the darker patches near the reef where the water can be more choppy. It is an upwind spot compared to Morne, so you can easily ride down to more advanced areas like One Eye if you wish, but it is self-sufficient for a complete session. Conditions are stable year-round, but optimal from June to October with consistent winds.
