Belle Mare at Quatre Cocos, on the east coast of Mauritius, is a popular spot for its large white sand beach and turquoise lagoon. Accessible from the public beach, it offers a generous space for riders of all levels.
The spot shares the same lagoon as Palmar, a little further south, with a wide and safe launch area. It is an ideal place for families, combining kitesurfing and activities like diving or catamaran excursions.
The atmosphere is relaxed, with kite schools on site to guide beginners in this bay protected by a coral reef.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The wind mainly blows side-on or onshore from the SE or ESE, ideal for the lagoon sheltered by the reef. The launch is on a wide and obstacle-free beach, with a spacious and safe take-off area, especially when heading towards Palmar to the south to avoid the swimming zone marked by buoys.
The navigation area is a large shallow lagoon up to the reef, perfect for jibes and freestyle in flat water. At high tide, the water rises and allows for more freedom, while at low tide, it remains navigable with foot access in the first meters. Be cautious of the reef passes for downwinds towards Poste Lafayette, check with local schools for timings and rocky areas.
The water is generally calm near the shore thanks to the reef, but can become chop beyond or with east swell. Beginners stay in the inner lagoon, while intermediates and advanced riders head out to the reef for waves of 1 to 2 meters.
Ideal conditions are a side-on to side-shore wind from the SE between 15 and 25 knots, stable for rapid progression of beginners and freestyle sessions.
The water is flat to chop in the inner lagoon, with small to medium waves at the outer reef. The bay is wide, offering plenty of space without overcrowding.
Currents are generally weak in the protected lagoon but can strengthen near the reef passes or during low tide. Tides have a moderate range of about 1 meter, influencing access to the reef.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in windy season, and 12 to 14 m² off-season or in light wind. Adjust according to your weight and the actual wind level.
The southeast trade winds dominate from May to October, with average speeds of 15-25 knots, consistent and predictable. The season is shorter than at Morne, but reliable in the months of June, July, August. Outside of this, the wind is lighter and more irregular.
The climate is tropical, with warm temperatures year-round around 25-30°C for air and water. The high season for kiteboarding runs from May to October, which is drier and windier, while the austral summer (November to April) is wetter with possible showers.
The lagoon is shallow with foot access to the reef, mostly sandy bottom. Gradual depth, ideal for falls without risk.
The water remains warm year-round, around 24-26°C in the austral winter (May-October) and 27-29°C in summer. A lycra or short wetsuit is usually sufficient.
