The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
La Preneuse benefits from generally calm and sheltered conditions due to its position on the west coast. The prevailing wind comes from the southwest to the west, creating side-shore to side-on conditions depending on the periods. The water is turquoise and shallow, forming a flat lagoon ideal for freestyle and learning.
Entry is easy from the fine sandy beach. The water surface generally remains flat to very slightly choppy, especially in low tide conditions. The navigation area is well cleared, without major obstacles. Kitesurfing schools often operate from this beach, indicating accessible and safe conditions for beginners.
Nearby, towards Morne, there are passes and reef areas with more pronounced waves for advanced riders. The current is generally weak at La Preneuse, but one must remain vigilant near the passes where it can intensify.
The ideal conditions are between 12 and 20 knots of wind from the southwest to the west. These conditions allow for smooth and safe navigation for all levels. With wind below 10 knots, navigation becomes difficult for beginners. Beyond 25 knots, conditions become more technical and reserved for experienced riders.
The water is clear, calm, and shallow for several meters, creating an ideal environment for kitesurfing. The water surface generally remains very flat, especially at low tide and in light wind. In stronger wind conditions, a slight chop is observed without significant waves. The water temperature is pleasant year-round, remaining between 24 and 28°C depending on the season.
The current at La Preneuse is generally weak to moderate, making the area accessible to beginners. However, near the passes and reef areas towards Morne, the current can become stronger and requires some experience. Tides play an important role in the dynamics of currents, particularly during high coefficients.
For typical conditions at La Preneuse (12-20 knots), recommended sizes vary according to the rider's weight and the day's conditions. Beginners and lighter riders will opt for kites of 13 to 15 m², while heavier riders or in light conditions will prefer 17 m². In windier conditions (20-25 knots), kites of 11 to 13 m² are more appropriate.
The wind regime at La Preneuse is dominated by the trade winds from the southwest to the west, particularly steady and reliable from April to November. These winds generally blow between 12 and 20 knots in normal conditions, with gusts reaching 25-30 knots on windy days. The wind is usually stronger in the late afternoon and can be very light in the morning.
Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. The west coast, where La Preneuse is located, is generally drier than other regions of the island. The seasons are reversed compared to the northern hemisphere, with a southern summer from November to March and a winter from May to September.
The depth at La Preneuse is gradual and very accessible. You can stand for several meters from the beach, making entry and recovery very easy.
