Roma

Fregene is a kitesurfing spot on the Tyrrhenian coast of Lazio, northwest of Rome. The main practice area is the Villaggio dei Pescatori, with its clean and spacious sandy beach. It is one of the few places around Rome where kitesurfing is allowed in the summer, thanks to a dedicated launch area.

The beach offers a pleasant setting with nice bars to the south, while the north remains quieter and less crowded. After the last kiosk, there is a space reserved for kiters to take off safely. Easily accessible from Fiumicino Airport, it is a convenient spot for a quick session.

The atmosphere is relaxed, popular with locals for its steady wind and proximity to the capital.

The spot faces west, ideal for winds from Maestrale (NW) and Ponente (W) which are side-shore or side-on. With these directions, the water is flat and the conditions are perfect for all levels. Winds from SE and NW also provide flat water with a sideshore wind.

The navigation area is wide, with easy access to the water on sand. Use the dedicated launch area after the last kiosk to avoid crowds to the south. To the north, it is more spacious and less populated. With SW, expect waves up to 2-2.5 m, making the spot more technical. Winds from E or N are offshore on flat water, but less stable.

No significant tide, the water remains navigable at all times. Thermal winds boost sessions in spring and summer almost every day.

Vent ideal
Wdominant
SW
S

The best conditions come from NW or W winds at 15-25 kts, side-shore on flat water. Avoid onshore winds from the south that make the water choppy.

État de la mer

The water can be flat or chop depending on the wind, with waves up to 2-2.5 m under SW. The bottom is sandy everywhere, with no rocks to worry about near the launch area.

Courants marins

No notable tides on this coast, so no impact on currents. The current remains weak in general, with no particular dangers reported.

Taille de kite recommandée

Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in medium wind, or 7-9 m² when it exceeds 20 kts. In light thermals, go for 11-13 m².

Météo & vent

The prevailing winds are Maestrale (NW) and Ponente (W), present 3-4 days a week outside the summer season. In spring and summer, daily thermals ensure steady wind. Currently, the wind is blowing at 21.2 kts with a score of 45/100.

Climat

The Mediterranean climate offers pleasant temperatures year-round, with hot summers around 25-30°C and mild winters around 10-15°C. Spring and autumn are ideal for kitesurfing, with a good balance between warmth and wind. February is often the best month for wind consistency.

Profondeur

Progressive depth with a sandy bottom everywhere. You can stand up a good distance from the shore, ideal for relaunches.

Température de l’eau

In summer, the water reaches 22-25°C, perfect in a shorty. Winter around 14-17°C, 5/3 mm wetsuit recommended. Spring/autumn around 18-21°C.
