The Public Beach in Castiglione della Pescaia, Tuscany, is a wide and wild beach bordered by a centuries-old pine forest that protects it from the road. Located just a stone's throw from the historic center and the castle, it offers easy access on foot or by bike via the cycle path. It is a popular spot for kiters due to its generous space without obstacles and its relaxed atmosphere.
Schools like PKS Maremma or Kitesurfing Castiglione animate the area with courses for all levels, equipment rental, and services such as showers, umbrellas, and a dedicated launch corridor. The beach is part of the eastern coastlines, ideal for kitesurfing thanks to their long free stretches.
The setting is perfect for combining kite sessions and family relaxation, with crystal clear water and a sandy bottom that slopes gently.
The prevailing wind is the Maestrale (NW), which blows side-on to the right (mura a dritta), ideal for smooth navigation on this southwest-facing beach. Typical forces range from 13 to 20 knots, enhanced by the thermal from March to October, with a marked launch corridor to avoid bathers and ample space for takeoff.
Launching is easy on the sandy beach without rocks or obstacles, and the navigation area extends for several kilometers along the eastern coastline, up to Marina di Grosseto. In case of swell, wave peaks form for advanced riders, but the water surface remains generally navigable. Schools provide a dedicated launch corridor and rescue boats (gommone) for optimal safety.
Be mindful of swimming areas during high season; respect the buoys. The spot is perfect for all levels due to its space and services, with the possibility of foil or unhooked for experts.
Ideal conditions are a side-on Maestrale at 15-20 knots, stable and thermal, for a smooth ride without too much excessive chop.
The bottom is sandy and sloping, with a chop water surface in established wind, becoming wave during swells that generate symmetrical peaks. The water remains clear and navigable in most conditions.
Currents are generally weak along this open coast, but they can strengthen near channels or in case of swell. Tides are moderate in the Mediterranean, with a low amplitude that does not significantly impact navigation.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12 m² in light to moderate wind, and 7 to 9 m² when the Maestrale blows strong at 18-20 knots.
The wind regime is dominated by the Maestrale (NW), which blows regularly from March to October with speeds of 13-20 knots. The local thermal enhances the breeze during the day, making sessions reliable and consistent, especially in the afternoon.
The Mediterranean climate of Tuscany offers warm summers around 25-30°C from June to September, ideal for kitesurfing, and mild winters with 10-15°C. The main season runs from May to October, with little rain and plenty of sunshine.
The depth is progressive with a sandy bottom; you can stand at a good distance from the shore, ideal for beginners and relaunches.
In summer (June-September), the water reaches 22-25°C; in spring/autumn, expect 17-20°C; in winter, around 14-16°C.
