Cagliari

The beach of Poetto, in Cagliari, Sardinia, is the large urban spot in the south of the island. It is a long, very busy stretch of sand, with easy access and a riding atmosphere well known to locals.

The spot is especially appreciated when the scirocco, levante, or thermal winds set in. The water can be playful, with waves and chop depending on the wind direction and sea state.

Location

Detailed information

At Poetto, the wind most often comes in onshore or side-on with SE and E flows, which aligns well with feedback from local riders. The spot also works with S, SSW, and SW depending on the situation, but these orientations can make navigation more irregular or technical depending on the exact angle on the beach.

Launching is done directly from the large sandy beach. The bottom is sandy, with no major obstacles in the main navigation area, which facilitates takeoff and water exit. However, the spot is very exposed to beachgoers in high season, so the launch area requires vigilance and space. The best runs are made by keeping a safety margin from swimmers, other practitioners, and the shorebreak area when the swell comes in.

Depending on the wind's orientation and strength, the water can transition from marked chop to real wave sections. It is a more comfortable spot in autumn and winter, when space is freer and conditions are cleaner. In summer, navigation can still be nice with the thermal, but the pressure on the beach and gusts require more anticipation.

Risks & Safety

  • The swimmer area can be very dense in season, especially during the day.
  • The shorebreak can make launching and returning to shore more delicate.
  • The mistral can become offshore and complicate safety offshore.
