The beach of Is Solinas, located on the southwest coast of Sardinia, is a wide bay about fifteen kilometers south of Punta Trettu. It is a popular spot as an alternative when it gets too crowded elsewhere, with immense space to ride without stepping on each other.
There is a camper parking right next to it and even a bar where you can ask for kite lessons. The lagoon behind the beach is pretty but prohibited for navigation, so everything happens on the open sea.
The area is perfect for unpacking the foil or riding freestyle, with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals.
The beach of Is Solinas is oriented towards the southwest, making it ideal for west to southwest side-on or side-shore winds, typical of Sardinia. The water surface is ultra-flat thanks to a large area of shallow water, up to 100 meters from the shore where you can stand everywhere, perfect for easy take-offs and landings.
Launching is done directly from the wide sandy beach, with no obstacles. The navigation area extends across the entire vast bay, with plenty of space for freestyle, wake style, or foil, even when it gets crowded. Just be careful of the prohibited back lagoon and the seagrass towards Porto Botte in the north.
No major tidal effects here, the spot works well at any time with a steady wind around 20 knots. The best sessions are when the wind picks up in strength, to enjoy the endless space without risking collisions.
Ideal conditions are side-on winds from west to southwest between 18-25 knots, for a flat water surface and perfect power. Avoid pure onshore which can create chop.
The water surface is generally flat to light chop, ideal for freestyle and foil. With 100m of shallow water, it remains smooth even in strong winds.
Some seagrass may be present to the north, but the center remains clean.
Currents are weak to negligible in the bay of Is Solinas, thanks to its open but protected configuration. Tides have little impact, with a moderate range in the Mediterranean.
No dangerous channels reported, but be cautious to the north near Porto Botte.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12m² in typical conditions of 15-25 knots. Go larger 11-13m in light wind, and 7-9m when it picks up.
The wind regime is dominated by the Maestral or Mistral coming from the northwest, but here the west-southwest side-shore winds are the most effective. Typical strengths hover around 15-25 knots, steady and gust-free thanks to the bay's protection.
The spot excels when the wind picks up, offering clean and powerful sessions all year round.
The Mediterranean climate of Sardinia offers hot, dry summers with temperatures around 25-30°C, and mild winters around 10-15°C. The kite season extends throughout the year, with a wind score of 83/100 and all months recommended.
Spring and autumn are great to avoid excessive heat, while winter brings more consistent wind without too much cold.
The depth is gradual and very shallow, with standing depth up to 100 meters from the shore on mostly sandy bottom. Perfect for beginners and foil.
Water temperatures range from 14-16°C in winter to 22-25°C in summer. A shorty wetsuit is sufficient from May to October, full suit in winter.
