Südstrand (Fliegerdeich)
Allemagne · Lower Saxony
The Südstrand of Wilhelmshaven, located at Fliegerdeich on the shores of Jadebusen in Lower Saxony, is the reference spot for locals. It is an authentic place, both accessible and technical, offering varied conditions depending on the tides and wind. The spot benefits from a proximity to the city, making it a true city spot where riders come regularly.
The atmosphere is relaxed despite a somewhat particular setting: access to the water is via stairs due to a stone-reinforced bank, and the launch area is limited. Despite these constraints, the spot remains very popular for its versatility and its potential in freeride and freestyle.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The Südstrand mainly works with south to southeast winds (S, SSW, SE, ESE, SSE), which offer the best conditions. With these directions, the wind is side-shore to slightly offshore, creating ideal conditions for speed and freestyle.
Conditions vary significantly depending on the tide. At high tide, the water surface widens and offers a nice navigation area with generally flat to slightly choppy conditions. At low tide, the water level drops significantly, but a channel (priel) about 200 meters wide and 2 kilometers long remains navigable, offering perfect flauwasser conditions for freestyle. This feature makes the spot practicable almost all day.
Launching is done via regularly spaced stairs along the bank. It is recommended to navigate about 2 to 4 hours before and after high tide to have enough water. Beyond these slots, the spot becomes very technical at low tide. Note: wind with a northern component makes the spot less favorable; in this case, it is better to head to Hooksiel or Banter See.
Beyond 5 Beaufort, the water surface becomes very choppy, especially with southwest winds. Mastery of the waterstart is essential in these conditions.
