Grünstrand
Allemagne · Lower Saxony
Grünstrand in Norddeich, Lower Saxony, is a kitesurfing spot located on the northern coast of the North Sea in East Frisia, between the port and the bathing beach. This tidal area in the heart of the Wadden Sea offers a large expanse of shallow water protected by sandbanks. Locals appreciate its easy access via the paved promenade and its large lawn for setup.
A surf school on-site offers lessons and equipment, making the spot ideal for beginners. The kite area is marked by red buoys, with a dedicated space of 30 meters between the beach baskets for takeoff and landing.
Close to ferries to islands like Norderney, it is a convenient place to combine a session and an escape.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The spot works mainly 4 hours before and after high tide, with a tidal range of 2 to 2.5 m, extendable to 5 hours under westerly wind filling the bay. Launching is done via a narrow paved access marked by red buoys to the left of the sailboats; beginners (VDWS level <5) start in the water, advanced on the large lawn or the 30 m area between the beach baskets.
The navigation area is wide, protected to the north by a long stone jetty (invisible at high tide) and limited to the south by the swimming area. The orientation of the beach to the north means that winds from N-NE to E are perfect side-shore, WNW onshore, and from the southwest also side-shore; easterly winds are offshore and gusty. The water is standing depth (knees to waist) even at high tide due to the sandbanks, with light chop or flat depending on wind strength, and small waves under westerly on the bank.
Be cautious of 3 submerged jetties and sandbanks; a briefing at the school is recommended for newcomers.
