Le Porge Océan

The beach of Le Porge Océan, in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, stretches over 13 km of fine sand between Lacanau and Cap Ferret. It is a popular spot for experienced kiters due to its waves and easy access from Bordeaux.

The setting is wild with its preserved dunes and relaxed atmosphere. Locals come for the regular thermal wind and long sessions.

In season, a dedicated kite area is marked to avoid bathers.

Location

Detailed information

The spot works ideally with wind from Northwest to North (side-on to side-shore perfect for surfing the waves) or from South to Southwest (side-shore for freestyle). The orientation of the beach facing west captures the offshore winds well without too much wind shadow, but in North wind, a wind shadow area forms near the shore: prefer to launch from the water.

Launching is easy on the clean sand, with a wide beach. The navigation area extends offshore 300 meters during monitoring periods (June to September), north or south of the bathing area marked by a checkered flag. At low tide, the channels offer flat water for tricks, while at high tide the water surface becomes choppy with waves up to 2m.

In the height of summer, stay vigilant in the marked 50m area for kite passage. The NW thermal dominates in spring and summer, making the spot consistent. For waves, position yourself on the shifting sandbanks that change often.
