Lacanau Océan

The central beach of Lacanau Océan is the beating heart of this Gironde spot, located in Nouvelle-Aquitaine facing the Atlantic. It is a very busy place in summer, with a friendly atmosphere and well-developed facilities, including the Maison de la Glisse which hosts local riders.

This spot offers very variable conditions depending on the season. In winter and off-season, it is a free playground for all levels, while in summer, strict regulations limit practice to late hours. The central beach benefits from a great width that facilitates take-offs and landings, even for beginners.

Location

Detailed information

The central beach of Lacanau Océan mainly works with a thermal northwest wind, particularly active in spring and summer. The orientation of the beach offers side-shore to side-on conditions with this dominant wind regime.

In summer (strict regulations): kitesurfing is prohibited before 7 PM on the central beach. A channel has been set up to access the navigation area without endangering bathers. At low tide, the baïnes create smooth areas ideal for training and tricks. The current can be quite marked, especially near the baïnes.

Off-season: navigation is free, especially to the north of the central beach in front of the Maison de la Glisse. Riders gather in this area which offers nearby parking and hot showers. The wind is generally stronger and more consistent there than to the south, as it avoids the alios (downwind areas).

At low tide, the water surface becomes flatter with smooth areas for progression. At high tide, the waves can be more powerful, especially in spring and summer. Caution: in north wind, a downwind area forms at the approach of the beach, making it preferable to take off from the lake in these conditions.
