Cap Ferret

The West Beach at Cap Ferret, located in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is one of the most exposed areas of the Gironde coastline. This beach offers a wild setting with good tourist infrastructure, restaurants, and parking nearby. It is a spot favored by riders for its full west orientation that captures the Atlantic swell well.

The spot is characterized by a beach break with left and right waves. The environment remains quite preserved despite summer crowds, and conditions can vary significantly depending on tides and seasons.

Location

Detailed information

West Beach works ideally with a northwest swell and an east wind. The full west orientation of the spot allows it to capture the Atlantic swell well and regularly offer good conditions. The dominant wind in the morning is generally northeast, while in the afternoon it shifts to northwest, which can create side-shore to side-on conditions depending on the time.

Launching is done directly from the beach. The water surface is highly dependent on the tides: at low tide, one can stand in an area extending over a kilometer with a gradual sandy bottom. At high tide, the depth increases rapidly. The spot works well from three hours before high tide to three hours after. Be cautious of the current, which can be marked near the tip of Cap Ferret, and the many moored boats in summer that represent significant obstacles.

In high season (June to September), the practice is regulated, and it can be difficult to find space among the hundreds of boats present in the basin. Off-season, conditions are calmer.

Risks & Safety

  • Be cautious of the current, which can be very marked near the tip of Cap Ferret and the channels.

  • The baïnes are powerful and require a good understanding of the conditions before sailing.

  • In summer, the hundreds of moored boats represent significant obstacles to avoid.

  • It is imperative to check the tide times and coefficients before each session, as they directly influence conditions and currents.
