Le Site du Gois
France · Pays de la Loire
The Site du Gois in Barbâtre, on the island of Noirmoutier in Pays de la Loire, is a popular spot for its vast sandbanks that form a large lagoon at low tide. Located between the bridge and the road to Gois, it offers easy access from the beach and a safe water area, perfect for calm sessions.
It is an authentic place where riders enjoy a spacious area without too many people, even in season. Local schools often take students there by boat for supervised navigation.
The spot works well all year round, with consistent wind and conditions suitable for beginners as well as intermediates.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The Site du Gois is ideal with wind from NE, E, SE, which then comes in side-shore or side-on relative to the bay, providing consistent power without too many gusts. At low tide, two hours before and after, a huge sandbank creates an immense lagoon with standing depth everywhere, a perfectly flat water surface and a depth of about one meter, perfect for ground take-offs, easy launches, and stress-free jibes.
The navigation area extends across the center of the bay, between the bridge and the road to Gois, with good width to avoid congestion even on windy days. Schools often use a boat for access and safety, avoiding long walks in the mud. At high tide, you can still stand but the water surface turns to slight chop, still navigable for smooth freeride.
Be careful to respect the launch channel and not to overflow north towards the mussel beds. The spot is large, allowed outside the summer prohibition period in other nearby areas, and offers an easy return to the wind towards the beach of Barbâtre.
