Plage du Midi
France · Pays de la Loire
The Midi Beach in Barbâtre, on the island of Noirmoutier in the Vendée, is a popular spot for kiters due to its vast sandbank that forms a large bathtub at low tide. Facing directly west, it attracts freeride enthusiasts thanks to its fine sand and gentle slope towards the sea. It is one of the few spots allowed in summer, with a friendly atmosphere near the kite schools.
The spot is ideal for beginners, with shallow water everywhere at low tide and easy access from the beach. Locals come here for quiet sessions, away from the crowds, even though the thermal wind can work well from the northwest or southeast.
Close to the nautical clubs, the beach offers a family-friendly setting with pine trees and restaurants nearby, perfect for combining sailing and relaxation.

The spot works well with winds from south to northwest, ideally side-shore from the southwest or northwest for clean water. At low tide, a huge lagoon forms with an exposed sandbank, offering flat water everywhere and guaranteed standing depth, perfect for launching and taking off from the beach. The sailing area is vast, centered on the sandy bathtub, with easy upwind return by prevailing winds.
At high tide, the chop sets in and the water rises on the bank, making the spot navigable but less flat; avoid high spring tides where it becomes technical. Launching is done directly from the fine sand, with no notable shore break except from west swell. Respect the mandatory launch channel in summer to avoid restricted areas, and stay south of the spot to avoid encroaching on the oysters to the north. Boat access is possible from the schools for preserved areas, with little congestion even in season.
