Plage de la Davière
France · Pays de la Loire
The Davière beach, in Saint-Jean-de-Monts, stretches to the north of the resort, between pine forest and large dunes. It is a rather wild beach, with few constructions and a more tranquil atmosphere than the center of Saint-Jean-de-Monts.
It is appreciated by water sports enthusiasts for its natural side and its wide sandy strip. In summer, a dedicated kitesurf area is set up, making it a regular meeting point for local riders.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The beach is generally oriented west, facing the Atlantic Ocean. Winds from the SW to NW therefore arrive side-shore to side-on, providing safe conditions for kitesurfing. The W to NW wind is the most frequent and works well at this spot. With S to SE winds, the wind becomes more irregular due to the forest and terrain, and the water surface is less pleasant for sailing.
Launching takes place from the large sandy beach, with a practice area to the left of the beach access (looking at the sea) marked by a dedicated kite sign. This area is relatively uncrowded, usually with a reasonable number of riders, allowing space to launch and land kites without too much stress. The launch area is directly on the sand, staying well clear of pedestrian paths and respecting local signage.
The functioning of the spot depends a lot on the tide. At low tide, the beach is largely exposed and there is a very large area of hard sand to prepare equipment. The water surface remains quite formed with sandbanks creating wave zones and slightly smoother areas between two banks. At mid-tide and high tide, the beach width decreases, which reduces the launch area and requires more vigilance, especially in case of sustained wind or high traffic.
Sailing is mainly done along the beach, following the sandbanks. The water surface is typically in chop with waves more or less organized depending on the swell and wind direction. With well-established west swell, one can find beautiful series of waves offshore and on the banks, interesting for surfkite. When the swell is weak and the wind is established, the spot becomes more accessible to freeride riders who simply want to ride and send some jumps.
In summer, the beach remains generally calmer than the center of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, but it is still necessary to respect swimming zones and municipal regulations that may move or restrict the kite area. Outside of high season, the spot is much quieter, making it a good choice for sailing in a more relaxed atmosphere. Access is via paths through the dune and forest, with parking set back, which involves a short walk with the equipment.
