Cape Town

Sunset Beach is a kitesurfing spot located south of Bloubergstrand, in the Cape region of South Africa. This long beach with small dunes in the background attracts riders for its strong winds and ideal position for downwinds north along the coast.

Close to spots like Big Bay, it is part of an area rich in navigation options, with wind blowing regularly throughout the year. It is a popular place to combine freeride and waves in a spectacular setting facing Table Mountain.

The spot is located at the southern end of Blouberg, perfect for dynamic sessions when the wind establishes early in the day.

Location

Detailed information

The main wind comes from the southeast, oriented side-shore perfect for starboard navigation on this beach exposed to the Atlantic. It picks up early in the morning between 15 and 20 knots, then rises to 30 knots or more in the afternoon, ideal for freeride and wave sessions. Launching is done directly from the long and wide beach, with a clear take-off area thanks to the dunes set back that provide some protection from gusts.

The navigation area extends several hundred meters offshore, with waves forming according to the Atlantic swells, more pronounced in the Southern Hemisphere winter. For downwinds, Sunset Beach is the classic starting point towards Dolphin Beach or Big Bay, following the northern coast. Be cautious of areas close to the rocks to the south, and favor the center of the beach to avoid occasional bathers or surfers.

Tides have little influence on the main water body which remains navigable, but at low tide, the beach edge can be steeper. The spot works well with side-on from the SE, but a pure onshore wind from the south makes the waves more chaotic and launching more technical.

Risks & Safety

  • Rocks are exposed to the south of the spot, to be avoided when launching or in case of drift.

  • The risk of sharks exists as on the entire Atlantic coast, always navigate in groups.

  • Very strong wind in the afternoon can be surprising, choose your kite size wisely.

  • Be cautious of surfers and bathers in the center of the beach during the day.
