Cape Town

Paarden Eiland is an industrial spot located on the shores of Table Bay, in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a popular place for kiters due to its flat water and proximity to the city.

Surrounded by port areas and shipyards, it offers an unusual setting with a view of Table Mountain in the distance. Locals come here for quiet freeride sessions.

Easy access from downtown, with parking near sandy launch areas.

Location

Detailed information

The dominant wind comes from the southeast in summer, blowing side-on relative to the northwest-facing beach, creating an ideal flat water surface for freestyle and freeride. Launching takes place on a wide sandy beach, with a grassy or sandy take-off area near the warehouses.

The riding area extends 500 to 1000 meters offshore, with shallow water near the shore (knee to waist deep) and moderate chop further out depending on high tide. At low tide, the water remains navigable but more technical near rocky areas. Be cautious of boats in the bay, stay within the designated area between the buoys.

Downwinder sessions are popular towards Bloubergstrand or Big Bay, with wind picking up in the afternoon to 25-30 knots. A local feature: the spot is sheltered from strong northwest winds by the peninsula but can be gusty in the morning.
