Cape Town

Horse Trails Beach is a spot located in Cape Town, in the Western Cape, South Africa. It is a long sandy beach that is part of the Table View area, popular with kitesurfers for its exposure to the constant summer wind. There is a lively atmosphere with stunning views of Table Mountain.

Close to spots like Dolphin Beach or Kite Beach, Horse Trails Beach offers easy access from the coastal road. Locals come here to ride in varied conditions, between flat water and small waves. It is a convenient place for downwind sessions to the north.

The beach is wide and sandy, with few facilities but a relaxed atmosphere typical of the South African West Coast spots.

Location

Detailed information

The main wind, called the Cape Doctor, blows from the southeast (SE, SSE) in summer, side-on to side-off relative to the northwest-oriented beach. This creates an ideal water surface with a flat area offshore and small waves near the shore, perfect for freestyle or beginner waveriding. Launching is done directly from the wide sandy beach, with no major obstacles, and the launch area is spacious even when crowded.

In high season (November-March), the wind rises to 25-40 knots in the afternoon, with a gradual acceleration after lunch. The beach is tide independent, so it is navigable at all tides, but at low tide, the water is smoother for tricks. We stay in Table View Bay to avoid overly exposed areas, and it is a good starting point for downwinders to Big Bay or Haakgat. Watch out for gusts if coastal buildings influence the neighboring spot.

Navigable areas extend several hundred meters offshore, with enough space to maneuver even in high traffic. Waves remain manageable (less than 1-3m), and the gradual bottom allows for quick recovery in case of a fall.

Risks & Safety

  • The beach is wide but watch out for other riders during peak times.
  • Avoid drifting towards rocky areas to the north if the wind turns offshore.
