Cape Town

Big Bay is a renowned kitesurfing spot in Cape Town, in the Western Cape of South Africa. Located north of the city, it offers large clean waves and powerful wind, ideal for wave sessions. The beach is lined with a promenade featuring cafes, bars, and kite shops, and a perfect lawn for watching the pros.

The spot attracts surfers, windsurfers, and experienced kiters, especially on windy days. It has previously hosted the Red Bull King of the Air competition before it moved to Kite Beach. It is a lively place with good infrastructure, easy parking, and direct access to the water.

The bay is narrow, bordered by rocks on both sides, and kiters generally navigate to the right while progressing downwind to avoid the crowd.

Location

Detailed information

The dominant wind comes from the SE, S, or SW, often side-onshore relative to the northwest-facing beach, creating powerful conditions but sometimes gusty near the shore. It increases in strength in the afternoon, with speeds of 20 to 40 knots in the high season from December to March, more consistent once out at sea. The water state mixes flat near the beach and at Klein Baai south of the rocks, with medium to big waves that remain clean even in strong wind, perfect for wave riding.

Launching is done on a wide sandy beach, but be careful of swimming areas to avoid like Klein Baai and the one to the north. The main navigation area is in front of the Cape Town Kite Club lodge and downwind towards Dolphin Beach or Kite Beach for downwinders. Windsurfers often stay to the left, while kiters go to the right. Kamers north of the rocks offers a good wave setup with flat close to the shore. The spot is narrow, progress downwind for more space in case of crowd.

No major impact from tides on the water state, but check the rocks to the north that sometimes show. Top infrastructure with parking, showers, and restaurants, but crowded in peak season with locals and pros.
