Saint-Cast-le-Guildo

The Grande Plage beach in Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, located on the north coast of Brittany, offers a vast stretch of sand facing the English Channel. It is a spot frequented by locals and visitors for its proximity to the town and easy access. The beach is appreciated for its large tides and amplitudes that significantly alter the sailing conditions.

The Grande Plage beach remains a versatile location: suitable for freestyle sessions as soon as the wind is steady and for wave riders when the swell comes in. The atmosphere is typically local, with schools and practitioners present mainly during the season.

Location

Detailed information

The wind often blows from the west to northwest, which gives a side-shore to side-on component depending on the exact orientation of the wind and the access point. Launching is done from the main beach; at low tide, the usable area widens significantly, allowing for safe take-off and landing. The depth is gradual with a mainly sandy bottom, but banks and local bottom changes may appear depending on the tides.

The main navigation area is located in front of the central beach; it is preferable to avoid the northern area near the rocks and the edges of the boat access channel. Local schools set up their take-off/landing zones near the parking lots and access paths to limit crossings of bathers. In strong wind and swell, the area close to the shore can form surfable sections, while in small swell the water surface can remain choppy until mid-tide.

Be cautious of high tides that reduce the available beach and bring the navigation area closer to coastal obstacles. Currents strengthen near the passes and the entry channel; in case of land wind (east/local), conditions can become onshore and more dangerous for kitesurfing.
