Île-Grande

Saint-Sauveur at Île-Grande, in northern Brittany in the Côtes d'Armor, is a spot exposed to the south wind in a small sheltered bay. It is easily accessible via the port road after the camping roundabout, with a grassy parking area available. It is a quiet place on the Pink Granite Coast, but reserved for riders who know the area well.

The spot attracts a moderate crowd as the south wind is often irregular, and a high tide is needed for proper navigation. Locals go there for technical sessions when the conditions settle.

Near Pleumeur-Bodou and Trébeurden, it is part of a wild corner with typical granite landscapes of the region.

Location

Detailed information

The Saint-Sauveur spot only works with south to southwest wind, which comes in side-on relative to the north-facing bay. At high tide minimum (5.50m of water), the water opens up for kitesurfing or winging, but the wind often remains irregular due to the coastal topography. The launch area is elevated, complicating launches with possible gusts.

Launching is done directly from the port beach, but beware of the many rocks that are exposed at low tide. The navigation area is limited to the bay to avoid the outer rocky zones, with a current that can push out to sea. Ideal for technical runs, but not for wandering far.

In case of light side-off wind, the water remains fairly flat offshore, but be sure to check the tide as the tidal range is significant in Brittany (up to 12m in the region). The best times are mid-high tide to full tide to have space without risking the rocks.
