Île-Grande (Port Saint Sauveur) in Trébeurden, Brittany, is a discreet spot in the Pink Granite Coast. It is accessed via a grassy parking area after the camping roundabout, near the port.
It is a small natural basin that offers a sheltered water surface, perfect for calm sessions when conditions are right. The locals keep it a bit secret due to its limited capacity.
The area mainly attracts riders who are well acquainted with the tides and local winds, in a wild setting typical of Trégor.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot mainly works at high tide with a minimum of 5.50m of water, forming a super flat basin magical for freestyle or freeride. At low tide, the area almost completely dries up, making navigation impossible and access technical.
Launching is done on grass at height, which requires caution due to the irregular wind up high. The water entry is sandy at high tide, with a narrow beach that widens a bit.
The ideal wind directions are side-shore from S to SW for the Port Saint Sauveur side, or NE to SE for the east side, creating a flat to chop water surface in a large shallow area like a lagoon. Navigation is towards Port Saint Sauveur from nearby spots like Goas Treiz, but max capacity is 5 kites to avoid overcrowding.
Ideal with S, SW side-shore winds at high tide for an optimal flat water surface, or NE to SE on the east side.
The water surface is flat to chop at high tide in the shallow basin, with a sandy and rocky bottom. Beware of the numerous submerged rocks that surface at low tide.
The current can be strong, especially near the passes and at low tide, to be monitored closely in this sheltered area.
Prefer sizes 9 to 12m² for moderate to strong local winds, suitable for flat water and expert capacity.
The wind regime is dominated by NW winds in the summer season, but here it is the south to southwest or east wind that activates the spot, often irregular in strength but sufficient for riding. Average attendance as these winds are less consistent.
The climate of the Pink Granite Coast is oceanic, with mild summer temperatures around 18-22°C and cooler winter temperatures around 8-12°C. The best months for kiting are January to April and September, with more reliable winds.
Rain is frequent, but sessions remain possible thanks to the varied exposure of local spots.
The depth is gradual and shallow like a lagoon, with a sandy bottom extending for several dozen meters. You can stand far out at high tide.
In summer, the water is around 16-18°C, while in winter it drops to around 10-12°C. A 5/3mm wetsuit is recommended year-round.
