Trébeurden

Toëno is a kitesurfing spot located in Trébeurden on the Pink Granite Coast in Brittany. This place offers a picturesque setting between the characteristic granite formations of the region and the small islands that dot the coastline. It is a spot favored by local riders for its variety of conditions depending on the tides and wind directions.

The spot benefits from good exposure to winds from the west to southwest, making it a reliable destination for regular sessions. The preserved natural environment and relatively easy access make it a must-visit in the region.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

Toëno works well with winds from northwest to southwest, offering a side-shore to side-on orientation depending on the precise wind direction. The water surface generally presents chop, but offers flat areas in certain spots depending on the tide. At low tide, you will find smoother sections ideal for freestyle, while at high tide, the water surface becomes more turbulent. Launching is done directly from the beach, with a clear take-off area. One must be attentive to small shells on the ground and not take off alone. Rocks and pebbles are present at certain water levels, requiring good knowledge of the tides before kiting.

The ideal conditions at Toëno occur with winds from the west to southwest, offering an optimal side-shore orientation. A wind strength between 12 and 20 knots allows for smooth and safe navigation. These conditions are particularly frequent in January, February, March, April, and September. Low tides with these wind directions offer the best compromise between flat water and stable wind conditions.

Sea state

The water surface at Toëno is characterized by regular chop under normal conditions, created by the configuration of the coastline and the small surrounding islands. At low tide, the water surface becomes flatter in certain areas, offering ideal conditions for freestyle and beginners. At high tide, the chop intensifies and the water surface becomes more turbulent. The granite environment creates calm water zones and others that are more turbulent depending on the exact position.

Sea currents

The currents at Toëno are generally weak to moderate, but one must remain vigilant near channel areas where the current can intensify. The tide plays an important role in the dynamics of the spot, influencing both the water surface and access to the beach. At high tide, some areas may become inaccessible or dangerous.

Recommended kite size

The recommended kite sizes vary according to seasonal conditions and tides. In winter and autumn with stronger winds, kites of 9 to 11 m² are appropriate. In spring and lighter conditions, kites of 11 to 13 m² allow for better progression. For beginners in optimal conditions, a 12 m² kite offers a good balance between control and power.

Weather & wind

The dominant wind regime at Toëno comes from the west to southwest, particularly pronounced in autumn and winter. These Atlantic winds bring good consistency and generally sufficient strength for kitesurfing. The spot receives disturbances from the ocean well, ensuring regular sessions, especially in late winter and early spring.

Climate

Brittany enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters and cool summers. Average temperatures range between 8°C in winter and 17°C in summer. The region experiences regular rainfall throughout the year, typical of the Breton coastline. The best times for kiting are January, February, March, April, and September, with more stable and consistent wind conditions.

Depth

The depth at Toëno is gradual from the beach. One can stand up to about 30-40 meters from the shore depending on the tide. The bottom consists of sand and small pebbles, typical of the region. At low tide, some areas become very shallow, which can be an advantage for beginners but requires increased vigilance regarding obstacles.

Water temperature

The water of the Pink Granite Coast is cold, typical of the North Atlantic. In winter (December to February), the temperature hovers around 8-9°C, requiring a thick wetsuit (minimum 5/4 mm). In spring (March to May), it gradually rises to 10-12°C. In summer (June to August), it reaches 14-16°C, allowing for a thinner wetsuit. In autumn (September to November), it drops back to 12-14°C.

⚠️ Risks & Safety

  • Rocks and pebbles may be exposed at certain water levels, so it is important to know the tide schedules before kiting.

  • The presence of small shells on the ground makes solo take-offs tricky; it is better to be accompanied or use a clear launch spot.

  • At high tide with a high coefficient (above 80), the beach may completely disappear, limiting access and exit.

  • The current can be strong near the channel, requiring good drift management.

  • Attendance is very high on weekends and school holidays, increasing the risk of collisions with other users.
