Hourtin Plage

The Centrale Beach in Hourtin Plage, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a long stretch of fine sand facing the Atlantic. It is a popular spot for kiters and surfers due to its windy conditions and easy access from the town.

In the immediate vicinity, Hourtin Lake offers a calm alternative for kitesurfing in freshwater, with dedicated areas. Local schools offer lessons for all levels in this friendly atmosphere.

The area combines a lively ocean beach and a safe lake, perfect for varying sessions according to the weather.

Location

Detailed information

On the Centrale Beach, the dominant wind comes from W, WNW, and NW, often side-on or side-shore relative to the north-south oriented beach, allowing for direct launches on the sand without obstacles. The navigation area extends along the beach, but one must remain vigilant in the swimming zones marked by nets in summer. For launching, the space is wide and sandy, ideal for both beginners and experienced riders.

The water state is generally chop to wave on the ocean side depending on the west swell, with small waves perfect for strapless or surf-kite, especially at low tide where beach breaks form well. Tides have no influence on general conditions, but the beach remains kiteable at all times. In case of strong onshore wind from the northwest, it can get choppy quickly, making technical jibes challenging.

For a more flat water experience, head to Hourtin Lake just a few minutes away, with an area marked by yellow buoys: easy launch on grass/sand, side-shore navigation in N, SW, NW, shallow bottom everywhere. Be careful not to exit the area, monitored by the police. Both spots complement each other well depending on the wind and swell of the day.
