Le Verdon-sur-Mer

The Plage Océane in Le Verdon-sur-Mer, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is a wild ocean beach north of the Gironde. It offers a wide expanse of fine sand facing the Atlantic Ocean, with a view of the estuary entrance.

It is a popular spot for kiters due to its regular thermal wind, especially in the warm season. Locals come here for its freedom and conditions suited for dynamic rides.

Close to the port of Verdon, it remains uncrowded outside of summer, making it a solid choice for sailing without crowds.

Location

Detailed information

The beach is oriented west, making it ideal for a side-on or side-shore wind coming from the NW or W, perfect for regular traction without too much drift. In N or SW wind, it also works well in light onshore. The thermal picks up around noon, often shifting from the cool morning to a stronger NW in the afternoon.

The water surface varies with the tides: at low tide, pools form with a flat bottom for tricks, but be cautious of shallow areas. At high tide, the water rises and the spot opens wider, with possible shorebreak near the shore. Launching is done directly from the wide sandy beach, which has no major obstacles. The launch area is spacious to the north of the beach, away from bathers.

Sailing is recommended to the north for cleaner wind and to avoid fishing areas or the port channel to the south. In summer, respect reserved zones and the upwind channel to reach the kite area without disturbing beachgoers. The spot is accessible year-round, but check the signs on-site for seasonal rules.
