Ilha do Guajiru

True icon of Brazilian kitesurfing, Ilha do Guajiru is a unique spot. Located about 240 km west of Fortaleza, this large lagoon bordered by mangroves and dunes is one of the largest flat water bodies in Brazil, and probably one of the most consistent in the world.

The wind blows here every day without exception from July to January, and the water, protected by a long sandbar, remains flat as a mirror for several kilometers. It’s an absolute paradise for freestyle, but also a haven for progression for beginners thanks to its shallow depth and natural safety. The village stretches along the lagoon, between kite-friendly pousadas, beachside restaurants, and palm trees bent by the wind. The atmosphere is 100% kitesurf: you can hear the pumps from morning, the kites fill the sky all day, and discussions inevitably revolve around tricks and nearby spots. It’s a place that is both magical and addictive: many come for a week… and stay for a month.

Location

Detailed information

The conditions at Ilha do Guajiru are of an almost supernatural regularity. The main lagoon, several kilometers long, offers ultra-flat water at high tide, ideal for freestyle, big air, or technical progression. At low tide, some areas become too shallow, but others turn into perfectly smooth water basins, highly sought after for pro training. In the sea, behind the sandbar, the wind remains strong and side-on, with gentle small waves perfect for varying sensations.

The side-onshore wind from east to southeast blows between 18 and 28 knots depending on the season. The smooth surface and the natural safety of the lagoon allow you to focus solely on the joy of riding. The sandy bottom, the large width of the water body, and the perfect visibility make it an incredibly comfortable spot, even for first-time navigation in open water.

  • The sun is intense, bring lycra, sunscreen, and hydration.
  • No organized rescue, but kite pousadas often have a support boat available if needed.
