Préa

About ten kilometers east of Jericoacoara, Préa is considered the wind temple in Brazil. This is where the wind blows the hardest, the longest, and the most consistently — to the point that some riders say that in Préa, “the wind never takes a day off.”

The village of Préa is small but entirely focused on kitesurfing: renowned schools, specialized pousadas, kite-friendly restaurants, and a laid-back end-of-the-world atmosphere. The main spot, often called Kite Beach Préa, stretches for several kilometers of golden sand. You navigate in a huge open bay, free of obstacles, swept by a powerful and laminar wind coming from the east. The spectacle is constant: dozens of kites in the sky, riders from all over the world in the water, and incredible light from sunrise to sunset. It’s a place where you come to live kite, not just to do it: everything revolves around the wind, the sessions, and the community.

Location

Detailed information

Préa is a wide, powerful, and predictable spot. The side-onshore wind, from east to southeast, blows between 20 and 30 knots on average, sometimes more in September and October. The water is regularly choppy, with gentle chop near the shore and well-spaced small waves further out. At low tide, the sea recedes and forms a flatter band of water, perfect for working on technique. At high tide, the chop strengthens, ideal for freeride or surfkite. The bottom is entirely sandy, without rocks or corals, and the huge beach offers unlimited takeoff space. Préa is a physical spot, made for riders who love power, consistency, and long engaged sessions. The more daring regularly take downwinds to Jericoacoara or Tatajuba, along the deserted coast, pushed by a wind that never weakens.

Risks & Safety

  • The spot in Préa is safe but demanding.
  • The strong wind requires choosing the right kite size: it is advised never to oversize.
  • The huge beach allows for easy takeoff, but the very dry sand can complicate solo kite landings.
  • The chop requires good technique to maintain control at full speed.
  • No official rescue, but local schools have safety boats available if needed.
  • The spot is open and without particular danger, but it remains reserved for riders comfortable in 25–30 knots constant.
