Mundaú

About thirty kilometers west of Flecheiras, Mundaú marks the end of a long ribbon of wild beaches lined with dunes and coconut trees. This small fishing village, located at the mouth of a river, hides an exceptional kitesurfing spot: the Mundaú lagoon. This body of water, formed by the meeting of the sea and the river, offers a perfect mix of flat and freeride, in a postcard-like setting. Surrounded by mangroves, golden dunes, and shifting sandbanks, Mundaú is a natural, still preserved spot, where the wind blows every day with the same regularity. The village itself remains very quiet, with a few pousadas and restaurants welcoming passing riders. Many arrive here downwind from Guajiru, enjoying continuous navigation along a deserted and splendid coastline. It’s a magical place to end a day of kite, swimming in the fresh water, watching the sun set over the lagoon, and enjoying the purest Brazilian atmosphere.

Location

Detailed information

Conditions at Mundaú vary according to the tide and the area. In the lagoon, the water is flat to slightly choppy, perfect for freestyle, freeride, or learning. The side-on wind enters perfectly, and the depth remains shallow over a large part of the water body. At the river mouth, there is a mix of fresh and salt water, with more pronounced currents, but also ultra-flat areas when the tide is stable. At sea, the swell forms small regular waves, ideal for relaxed surfkite. The wind blows side-onshore from east to southeast, averaging between 18 and 25 knots, with remarkable stability. The sandy bottom and width of the beach ensure easy and safe launching. It’s a very complete spot, combining lagoon, sea, and river, offering varied, peaceful, and visually spectacular sessions.

Risks & Safety

  • Mundaú is a generally safe spot.
  • The current at the mouth can be stronger at high tide, better to avoid it during the first sessions.
  • Some areas of the lagoon almost completely empty at very low tide — monitor the depth before venturing out.
  • The wind always remains side-on, ensuring an easy return to shore.
  • No rescue service, but the village is small and supportive: everyone looks out for each other.
