Playa Holbox Kite Spot is located on Holbox Island, north of Quintana Roo, about 7 minutes by taxi from downtown to the northeast. It is one of the two authorized spots in this nature reserve, with a beautiful sandbar that protects a shallow water area ideal for lessons. The setting is peaceful, surrounded by mangroves and pristine beaches, perfect for a relaxed atmosphere.
The beach is wide and spacious for setting up and launching, near the Las Nubes hotel. It is easily accessible on foot, by bike, or by taxi from the car-free village. It is an authentic place where local fishermen mingle with riders.
The island is 12 km long and 1.5 km wide, with a tranquil pace of life and turquoise waters that attract turtles and dolphins.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot works well with winds from NW, N, NE, and E, which are generally side-on or side-shore relative to the northeast-facing beach. The large sandbar creates a flat lagoon inside for beginners and a slightly choppy water surface on the other side, perfect for progression. Launching is done directly from the wide beach, and takeoff in the lagoon for more safety.
The navigation area is vast with standing up to 100m in the lagoon, then unlimited space at sea. Be cautious when the wind turns offshore from the village, then you need to head to Punta Mosquito by boat. Tides do not significantly impact the spot due to the low amplitude, but always check local conditions with schools like Lifestyle or Holbox Kiteboarding.
For sessions, rig on the limited beach near Las Nubes, but launch in the lagoon. It’s a dream for foil or twintip in butter flat water with small chop.
Ideal conditions are with 12-25 knots from NW to E, side-on for a flat water surface in the lagoon. Optimal season from November to May.
The water is turquoise and clear, with a flat to light chop water surface in the lagoon, and a bit more choppy outside. Standing on 100m, perfect for learning safely. Turtles and dolphins are often seen.
Currents are generally weak in the lagoon protected by the sandbar. However, be cautious in more open areas where they can intensify with offshore winds. Tides have a low amplitude, with no major impact on navigation.
Plan for sizes of 9 to 13m² for the typical wind of 12-25 knots. Smaller in strong winter, larger in light summer.
The wind is strongest and most consistent from November to May, with speeds of 12-25 knots, ideal for all levels. There is no specific local name, but it mainly comes from the north in winter. Summer sees lighter and more variable winds.
The climate is warm tropical year-round, with air temperatures around 25-30°C. The dry season from December to May offers the best wind, while summer is more humid with possible showers. Holbox is a small nature paradise, with no cars in the center.
The depth is very gradual with a sandy bottom. You can stand up to 100m in the lagoon thanks to the sandbar.
Water temperatures range from 26°C in winter to 29°C in summer. A lycra is sufficient, but a 3/2 combo is recommended during strong north season.
