Ikarus Kite Spot in Isla Blanca, Quintana Roo, Mexico, is a popular spot for kiters from around the world. Located 25 minutes north of Cancun, this spot surrounded by a large lagoon offers a beautiful, wild, and peaceful beach.
It is the perfect place to learn or progress, with a lively international community around the Ikarus Kiteboard Center. You meet riders from everywhere, and the atmosphere is relaxed, perfect for a beer at sunset after a session.

The Ikarus Kite Spot benefits from a constant wind stronger than elsewhere in Mexico, often between 20 and 30 knots when it blows. The wind direction is variable: off-shore, side-off, on-shore, and side-on, making the spot usable in almost all directions, from N to S. The water surface is a large flat and shallow lagoon, perfect for all tides without notable changes.
Launching is done directly from the sandy beach, with a wide and obstacle-free take-off area. The navigation area is safe in the lagoon, ideal for freeride, strapless, and tricks, with enough space for both beginners and advanced riders. Several areas are available, including the main spot Riviera Maya for novices. Local feature: the water remains shallow everywhere, you can stand for long distances, and the Ikarus center offers pro gear and patient instructors.
Easy access by taxi from the Puerto Juarez ferry, 20 minutes away, for about 10-15 USD.
Ideal conditions are a side-on or side-off wind of 15 to 25 knots, from N to E, for a perfect flat water surface and consistent power.
The water state is flat to light chop, thanks to the sheltered lagoon. Few waves, even in strong winds, and the water remains calm for smooth sessions.
Currents are weak to negligible in the protected lagoon. Tides have little impact on the spot, with a moderate range and no reported dangerous channels.
Opt for sizes between 8 and 15 m² depending on wind strength, with 9-12 m² being the most common for typical winds of 15-25 knots.
The wind regime is constant and reliable, particularly from December to May. The dominant directions are from N, NE, E, SE to S, with average strengths of 15 to 25 knots, and gusts up to 30 knots. No specific local name, but it is windier than elsewhere in Mexico.
The tropical climate of Isla Blanca is warm year-round, with air temperatures between 25°C in winter and 30°C in summer. The best season for kiting is from December to May, and from October to April, with more reliable wind. Summer months are wetter but still rideable.
The depth is gradual and shallow in the lagoon, with a sandy bottom. You can stand for a long distance from the shore, ideal for learning.
The water temperature is warm year-round, around 26°C in winter and up to 29°C in summer.
