Playa Isla Blanca Cove, located at the northeast tip of Isla Blanca in Quintana Roo, is a small sheltered cove in a vast shallow sea lagoon. This spot is just 25 minutes north of Cancún, on a white sand peninsula bordered by mangroves and pristine jungle.
It is a popular place for kitesurfing, perfect for beginners due to its calm waters up to the hip everywhere. You can easily escape the noise of Cancún and Playa del Carmen, with a natural and laid-back atmosphere.
The area is accessible by car via a dirt road, and there are schools on-site for lessons or equipment rental.
The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.
The spot works with all wind directions thanks to its semi-closed lagoon, but it is especially the famous "Norte" from the north that comes in onshore clean and strong, ideal for freestyle or learning. The launch is directly from the white sand beach, with a large take-off area at the tip of the lagoon where the wind is most consistent.
The navigation area extends for several kilometers in the lagoon, flat to light chop depending on the direction: super flat in east or southeast winds, a bit more choppy with northwest or north. No significant tide, the water just rises a few centimeters under strong wind, and you can stand everywhere up to the waist or hip.
For beginners, stay in the central part of the lagoon near the schools; advanced riders will go towards the tip for more space and power. Be careful to walk a bit from the parking for the best spots, and rescues are easy on foot or by boat from the camps.
Ideal conditions are with winds from north to northwest between 15-25 knots, clean onshore over the lagoon for a flat and powerful water surface.
The water is generally super flat and smooth, perfect for freestyle, with a clean sandy bottom. It can become slightly choppy on side-off or northwest wind days, but remains manageable and safe.
Currents are weak or even non-existent in the protected lagoon, thanks to its semi-closed nature. Tides have little impact, with a minimal range of just a few centimeters.
Plan for 9 to 12 m² sizes for strong Nortes, and 12 to 15 m² for lighter summer winds. Beginners often opt for a stable 12 m².
Winds are consistent from November to May, with the Nortes season where north to northwest winds blow strong between 10-30 knots, onshore and powerful. Outside of this, south to east winds are possible but more variable and less strong.
The climate is warm tropical year-round, with temperatures around 25-32°C during the dry season from November to May, and more humid in summer with possible showers. The Nortes season from November to April brings cool winds from cold fronts in the north, sometimes feeling like 15-20°C.
The depth is very shallow, up to the hip or waist for miles in the lagoon, with a sandy bottom everywhere, ideal for relaunching without risk.
The water stays warm year-round around 26-29°C, a bit cooler at 24°C during the Nortes season from December to February, a shorty is usually sufficient.
