Strand in Vrouwenpolder, Zeeland in the Netherlands, is an official kitesurf spot with a large sandy beach facing the Veerse Gatdam dam. Located between the North Sea and the Veerse Meer, it is a popular place for its conditions suitable for beginners and freeriders.
In front of the Vertigo Sports school, a shallow lagoon often forms at high tide, ideal for first sessions or tricks. The spot is lively with kite schools, but there is plenty of space for everyone.
At low tide, you can ride in the sea with a choppier water surface, perfect for experienced riders looking for chop or waves on the sides.
The spot works well with winds from northwest, north, or northeast, which are side-onshore relative to the east-facing beach. At high tide, a flat and shallow lagoon forms in front of the Vertigo school, thanks to the sandbanks: it's the perfect place for launching, takeoff, and riding for beginners or to practice tricks safely.
The official riding area starts to the right of Vertigo as seen from the dam, with plenty of space on the wide beach. At low tide, the lagoon disappears and you have to go out to sea: the water surface becomes choppy, sometimes with medium waves at Breezand to the left or at Banjaard to the right, ideal for strapless wave riding.
The current is influenced by the tides of the Oosterschelde, be sure to check the schedules. Paid parking at the Veerse Gatdam lots, read the info board at the spot. Popular with schools, it can be crowded on windy days, but the space allows for distancing.
Ideal conditions with 15-25 kts from NW, N, or NE, side-on, at high tide for the flat lagoon. Perfect for freestyle or learning.
Water surface flat at high lagoon, turning to chop or small waves at low tide. The bottom is shallow sandy everywhere, with long walkable areas.
The currents are moderate, related to the tides of the Oosterschelde. They intensify near the passes and sandbanks, especially at low tide.
Beware of variations depending on the wind direction: north fills the lagoon, south can empty it faster.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12m² in typical conditions of 15-20 kts. 7-9m² for stronger days with waves, 11-13m² for light winds in the lagoon.
The winds are consistent due to Zeeland's exposed position. No specific local name, but dominant winds from NW, N, and NE that are side-on to the beach, with typical strengths of 15-25 kts in season.
The spot performs well year-round according to forecasts, with good potential even in winter.
