Oesterdam - Oesterdam westzijde badstrand
Netherlands
Oesterdam
The Oesterdam west side beach, located on the dike of the Oosterschelde in Zeeland, is a popular spot for beginners due to its shallow water and well-defined kite area. With a sandy beach that appears at low tide, it's a convenient place to progress in freestyle or learn the basics.
The setting is typical of Zeeland dikes, with a road passing overhead and direct access from the free parking. Locals appreciate the consistency of the wind and the available space when conditions are good.
It is a place shared with other sports like wingfoiling, in a protected natural environment.

Informations utiles
The spot works well with winds from N to SW (N, NW, W, SW, S), which are side-shore or side-on relative to the east-west oriented dike. The water remains flat to choppy, never waves thanks to the sheltered position of the Oosterschelde. The navigation area is marked by yellow buoys, spacious and safe to stay away from obstacles.
For launching and taking off, use only the sandy beach available 2 hours before and after high tide. At high tide, the space is reduced to a narrow strip of grass or gravel near the road, complicating launches. At low tide, the beach widens and the water is shallow over 50m, ideal for waterstarts and jibes. Avoid the base of the dike covered with shells. Mobile schools like those in fire truck offer hot showers on site.
Local peculiarity: always kite facing the water for take-offs, and secure your kite on the ground to prevent it from flying towards the road. The current is linked to the tides of the Oosterschelde, but remains manageable in the zone.
The ideal conditions are with side-shore wind from NW to SW, medium strength for a flat water surface. Favor low tide for more beach space and shallow water.
The water state is choppy with a muddy bottom, but remains smooth as a mirror without waves. At low tide, it is shallow and flat over a wide area, perfect for beginners. At high tide, the water is deeper and choppy near the shore.
The currents are influenced by the tides of the Oosterschelde, connected to the North Sea. They generally remain weak in the kite zone, but can accelerate near the passes. Check the tide schedules to navigate safely.
Opt for sizes of 8 to 12m² in typical conditions, smaller in strong NW winds. For beginners, 10-12m² are suitable for flat water.
The wind regime is frontal, typical of the Netherlands, with regular sessions thanks to the open position. The main directions are SW, WSW, W, WNW, NW, bringing consistent power. The average strength is suitable for freestyle and learning, reinforced by the dike.
The climate in Zeeland is oceanic, with moderate temperatures year-round. From May to September, the air ranges from 15 to 25°C and the water from 14 to 19°C. From October to April, the air drops to 4-12°C and the water to 5-8°C, requiring a thick wetsuit or drysuit in winter.
The depth is shallow at low tide, with foot possible on 50m but the bottom covered with shells. At high tide, the water is deep right from the shore, making the area more technical.
In summer (May-September), the water is at 14-19°C, a shorty is sufficient. In winter (October-April), it drops to 5-8°C, a thick wetsuit or drysuit is recommended.
