Ameland

Strand Hollum, on the northwest coast of Ameland, is a spot favored by local riders for its large beachfront and direct access to the North Sea. It’s a simple and effective place, with a natural setting typical of the Dutch islands.

People come here to ride on an exposed spot, with plenty of space on the beach and often solid conditions. The atmosphere remains quite calm, away from urban areas, and the spot works best when the wind is well established.

Location

Detailed information

The spot is ridden on the North Sea, with ideally side-shore to side-on wind depending on the day's orientation. According to spot maps, the practice area at Hollum is located on a long beach permitted for kitesurfing, with seasonal regulations on Ameland on the North Sea side: from March 1 to November 1, kitesurfing is allowed in defined sectors, including the one near Hollum, and you must stay 50 meters from the high water line.

At low tide, the water remains generally accessible but more variable, with more exposed beach and a longer launch depending on the coefficient. At high tide, the usable space near the shore decreases and the launch area becomes more demanding, especially if the shore break is present. The bottom is typically sandy on this coast, and launches are made from the beach with great vigilance on the lines and launch area, as the spot is wide but can be very busy in season.

The spot is known for its rather consistent conditions on the island, with a more comfortable session when the wind arrives well open. Spot sources describe Hollum as an area with shallow to moderately choppy water, sometimes with chop and small waves depending on the swell and tide.

Risks & Safety

  • The shore break can make launching technical at high tide.
  • The current can be strong near the shore and increase drift.
  • The regulated area must be respected, especially in the summer season.
