The spot of Paralía Schinias works well with a northeast to east wind, which blows side-on relative to the south-facing beach. The launch area is wide and sandy, with a good takeoff beach in the center of the bay protected by the pines. The water is shallow near the shore, perfect for waterstarts, and the navigation area extends 500m offshore before it gets deeper.
No significant tides in the Mediterranean, so the water surface remains constant: flat to choppy depending on wind strength. In light wind, it’s flat ideal for freestyle; stronger, it gets a bit choppy but remains rideable. Avoid the ends of the beach where launching is more technical due to the trees. Local schools offer gear on-site for beginners.
The thermal wind picks up around noon in summer, side-shore from the sea, with good acceleration in the bay. Navigation is free but respect the space of swimmers to the south.
The ideal conditions are a side-on northeast wind at 18-25 knots, for a flat water surface and consistent power. Avoid pure onshore winds that make the water too choppy.
The water is generally calm and flat in moderate wind, becoming choppy in strong wind. Clean sandy bottom, no seagrass, and excellent visibility. Ideal for long sessions without fatigue.
Currents are weak to negligible in the bay of Schinias, thanks to its natural protection. There is no significant tidal range, so no notable variations. Stay in the center to avoid any minor drift offshore.
Opt for 9 to 12m² sizes in typical conditions. Go larger (12-14m) in light morning wind, and smaller (7-9m) when the Meltemi is blowing strong.
The prevailing wind comes from the northeast (Meltemi) in season, with strengths of 15-25 knots in the afternoon. It is a daily thermal that increases in intensity, reliable from May to September. In winter, more variable north winds can blow strong, up to 30 knots.
The Mediterranean climate of Attica offers hot and dry summers with temperatures around 25-35°C from June to September. Winters are mild, between 10-15°C, with rare rainfall. The best months for kitesurf are from March to October, thanks to the constant wind and warm water.
The depth is gradual with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand up to about 50-100m from the shore, perfect for beginners.
The water reaches 22-26°C in summer (June-September), comfortable in a shorty. In winter, it drops to 15-18°C, a neoprene combo recommended.
