Kos

Marmari is an exceptional kitesurfing spot located on the west coast of the island of Kos, Greece, between Tingaki and Mastichari. This long sandy beach benefits from direct exposure to the north-west wind, the famous Meltemi, which accelerates due to a jet effect created by two small islands located about 8 km in front of the spot. The water surface is flat to choppy, with small waves, allowing all levels, from beginners to experts, to enjoy.

It is a unique, authentic, and refined place, appreciated by local riders for its consistent and powerful wind, often between 20 and 40 knots at the spot. The atmosphere is relaxed, with the presence of a high-end hotel, the Caravia Beach Hotel, and a water sports school. However, launching and taking off can be tricky due to the presence of palm trees on the small beach, and the kite area has been moved further away, where the beach is very narrow (about 10 m).

Location

Detailed information

The main wind is the Meltemi (NW), a thermal type, which starts around noon and stops exactly at sunset. Its direction is mainly side-on to side-shore relative to the beach, providing ideal conditions for kitesurfing. The water surface is flat to choppy, with small waves, and is tide independent. You can stand up to about 50 meters from the shore. The sailing area is located to the west of the beach, where the kite area has been moved further away, as sailing is prohibited in front of the main beach, now a swimming area. The launching and taking off zones are tricky due to the palm trees on the small beach, and care should be taken with swimmers in the main area.
