Cospudener See is an artificial lake located near Markkleeberg in Saxony, close to Leipzig. This spot, known as Übungsbereich, attracts kiters for its dedicated practice area.
Surrounded by residential areas and nature, it offers a calm setting for training away from the sea. Locals come regularly to enjoy the consistent wind from the lake.
It is a convenient place with easy access from Leipzig, ideal for sessions without too much travel.

The spot is oriented for optimal side-shore wind from SW and W, which often blows at 3-4 Bft on the lake. NE, ENE, and E winds are also recommended and create flat to choppy conditions with small waves in gusts.
The navigation area is marked in the Übungsbereich, with a gravel launch and take-off near the shore. The water is shallow for about 20m, perfect for maneuvers close to the sand.
No tidal influence, the water remains stable. Be cautious of adjacent swimming areas and stones in the water near the beach. In summer, east winds can be surprising but remain usable.
Ideal conditions are with a SW to W side-shore wind at 15-25 km/h, for a flat and manageable water surface.
The water state is generally flat to choppy, with small waves possible in strong winds. Sandbars near the shore and some stones dot the bottom.
No notable currents on this freshwater lake. The water is calm with no tides or strong flows.
Opt for sizes of 9 to 12m² in typical 3-4 Bft winds, smaller like 7-9m² in summer gusts.
The wind regime is consistent with 3-4 Bft from the West and Southwest being very frequent. Northwest winds are rarer, and in summer East winds can occur.
Forecasts often show gusts up to 15-25 km/h, with stable side-shore days on the lake.
The climate is continental with mild summers around 18-24°C and cold winters below 10°C. A wetsuit is needed almost all year round, shorty in summer.
The main season runs from April to November if properly equipped, with heat peaks up to 30°C in July-August. Off-season, it is very cold.
The depth is gradual with a bottom mixing sand and gravel. You can stand about 20m from the shore thanks to shallow areas.
The water varies from 5°C in spring to 20°C in summer. A wetsuit is required all year round except for a shorty in July-August.
