Markkleeberger See (Westseite)
Germany · Saxe
The Markkleeberger See, located in Markkleeberg near Leipzig in Saxony, is a former gravel extraction site transformed into a freshwater lake. The Westseite offers direct access to the spot with parking and proximity to a water sports school. It is a popular place for windsurfing due to its flat water and consistent winds, although kitesurfing is prohibited there.
The lake spans about 300 hectares with fine sandy beaches and a family-friendly atmosphere. Next to it, a whitewater canal attracts rafting and kayaking enthusiasts. The western area is convenient for beginners in windsurfing, with rental facilities on-site.
The surrounding plain promotes a good air funnel, making the spot interesting despite the restrictions on kites.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The spot on the Westseite of the Markkleeberger See is oriented for optimal SW winds, which come in side-shore from the west bank, creating a flat to light chop water surface. With NW or W winds, side-on, small waves form, ideal for windsurfing but risky for kiting due to the prohibition. Launching is done directly from the sandy beach near the surf center, with a limited take-off area due to local rules.
The lake is non-tidal, so the water surface remains constant: flachwasser near the shores, perfect for water starts and jibes. Avoid sailing east where the whitewater canal and swimming areas are prohibited. The best runs are along the west bank, staying clear of fishermen and bathers. Watch out for boats and canoes in the center of the lake.
The spot works well with thermal winds in the afternoon in summer, with reinforcement due to the flat topography. For riders, prioritize windsurfing; kiting is formally verboten by Saxon river regulations since 2015.
