Fehmarn

Flügge Strand, on the island of Fehmarn in Schleswig-Holstein, is a fine sandy beach bordered by the Baltic Sea. It is a popular spot for kiters due to its wide space and easy access from the nearby campsite.

The setting is simple and family-friendly, with an unobstructed view of the sea and a calm atmosphere outside of strong wind sessions. Locals often come here for regular sessions without excessive crowds.

Close to the west coast of the island, it offers a good compromise between easy sailing and the windy conditions typical of the region.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The Flügge Strand spot works well with wind coming from SW, WSW, W, WNW, and NW, blowing in a side-shore or side-on direction relative to the north-facing beach. The riding area is wide with shallow water near the shore, ideal for launching and taking off directly from the sandy beach.

The water surface is generally chop with small waves in strong winds, but remains manageable for jibes and freestyle. No major tidal influence, so conditions remain consistent throughout the day. Beware of more exposed areas offshore where the chop can intensify.

In case of dominant west wind, the spot is perfect for long sessions; depressions bring variable strengths, but the island offers other nearby spots if the wind turns too offshore.

Ideal wind
Wdominant
NWdominant
SWdominant

Ideal conditions are a side-shore wind from W to NW at 15-25 knots, stable and without excessive gusts. Perfect for small freestyle or wave sessions.

Sea state

The water surface features chop and small waves, especially in strong winds. The water is shallow near the beach, with a clean sandy bottom.

Clean conditions in side-shore, ideal for moderate wave riding or freestyle.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak at this Baltic spot. They may slightly intensify towards the east during storms, but remain manageable for experienced riders.

No major channel reported, unlike other areas of the island.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes of 9 to 11m² in medium summer winds, and 7 to 9m² during stronger autumn depressions.

Weather & wind

Frontal wind dominates, particularly good in west winds. It typically blows from SW to NW, with variable strengths depending on depressions: 15-25 knots on average in spring and autumn.

In summer, thermals boost light winds. The best months are April, May, September, and October.

Climate

The climate of Fehmarn is oceanic with cold winters and mild summers. Temperatures range from 0-5°C in winter to 18-25°C in summer, with decent sunshine during the season.

The ideal period extends from spring to autumn, with more consistent winds from April to October. Winter remains rideable despite the extreme cold.

Depth

The depth is gradual with a sandy and shallow bottom near the shore, allowing for standing on a good distance. Ideal for relaunches.

Water temperature

The water of the Baltic is cold: 8-12°C in spring/autumn, 18-22°C in high season. Long wetsuit all year round, shorty in warm summer.
