Plage des Grands Sables
France · Bretagne
The Grands Sables beach in Locmaria, on Belle-Île-en-Mer in Brittany, is the largest beach on the island with its 2 kilometers of fine, light sand. Nestled at the end of a protected cove between Palais and Locmaria, it offers a calm and sunny setting all day long.
It is a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts thanks to its seasonal water sports center that offers sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, and kayaking. The beach remains sheltered from west winds, making it a pleasant place to relax or navigate under favorable conditions.
With its unique sandy foreshore on the island, it also attracts shell collectors and families, especially in summer with lifeguard supervision and accessible facilities for people with reduced mobility.

The spot mainly works with winds from North to Northeast, which come in side-shore or side-on relative to the northwest orientation of the beach, offering a manageable water surface for kitesurfing. Launching is easy along the entire length of the beach thanks to the fine sand without rocks, with a wide and clear take-off area near the sailing school at the west entrance.
The water surface is generally chop with small waves in established wind, but remains calm and protected from west swells, ideal for freeride or freestyle sessions. At low tide, the foreshore extends widely with standing room for a long time, perfect for beginners or setting down the kite; at high tide, the navigation space gains depth without losing safety.
The navigation area extends 1.7 to 2 km depending on the tide, avoiding the mooring areas for sailboats to the east and the dinghies from the school. In season, the beach is busy, so anticipate bathers in the center and monitor the activities of the water sports center.
