Plouharnel

The beach of Sables Blancs in Plouharnel, at the eastern entrance of the Quiberon peninsula, is a large stretch of fine sand at the bottom of the bay. Sheltered by the state forest, it offers a wild and pleasant setting for kite sessions.

It is a popular spot for schools and locals due to its conditions suitable for freestyle and learning, with a often flat water surface. There are nearby campsites and easy access from Plouharnel.

The beach changes significantly with the tides, shifting from a swimming area at high tide to a space for tide pooling at low tide.

Location

Detailed information

The spot works perfectly with an East wind, from southeast to northeast, which gives a side-on to side-off orientation relative to the west-facing beach. The launch area is directly from the fine, wide, and accessible sand, with a clear take-off zone near the parking and the pines.

The navigation area is vast in the bay, ideal for freestyle, with a water surface flat to light chop depending on the tide and wind. At high tide, the water rises and the spot remains navigable but with less standing room; at low tide, you can stand very far out, up to several hundred meters, perfect for beginners in the 'pool' near the campsite.

Be careful to respect the zones: bay side for kite, avoid the waves on the other side like Sainte-Barbe reserved for surfers. The northeast anticyclonic wind is often consistent when the weather is nice, and the spot is crowded on weekends with schools and land sailing.
