La Hougue

The Baie à La Hougue, located near Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue in Normandy, is a sheltered bay in Cotentin prized for its large lawn ideal for rigging. At low tide, it completely empties and offers an immense space with feet very far away. It is a calm spot, perfect for freeride and freestyle, away from the crowds of the large beaches.

Close to the island of Tatihou, the bay changes completely with the tides, going from a flat and safe area to a more lively body of water at high tide. Locals appreciate it for its easy access and often consistent wind from the west.

No sandy beach but a wide lawn allows for take-off without worry, even at high tide when the water rises near the edge.

Location

Detailed information

The bay works well with winds from north to south-southwest, in side-shore or side-on depending on the direction, ideal for staying in the zone. At low tide, the water is completely flat for hundreds of meters with feet very far away, perfect for freestyle and beginners who can progress without stress. The launch takes place directly from the lawn or the edge, and the navigation area extends wide without major obstacles.

At high tide, small 50 cm waves form near the edge but the water remains flat afterwards, with enough space to navigate even if the beach disappears. The take-off is done on the wide lawn a few hundred meters from the village of Saint-Vaast, convenient and without sticky sand. Be cautious with west wind which is offshore but disturbed by the dunes, making take-off dangerous and the wind irregular.

The tides are quick in the Channel, so check the schedules: at low tide, you can stand up to 100-200m, and high tide offers enough space to prepare the gear. Current present at high tide with high coefficients, stay in the bay. Versatile spot for freeride at low tide and small waves at high.
