Le Becquet

The beach of Becquet, located near Cherbourg in Normandy, offers a spot in the protected harbor. It is a favorite place for riders due to its varied water conditions between chop and small to medium waves.

The spot is located in Tourlaville, with easy access by road and parking near a campsite. Locals often ride here with northeast winds, taking advantage of the protection of the large harbor.

It is a quiet area, not too crowded, ideal for progressing without the hustle of more famous spots.

Location

Detailed information

The spot works well with northeast wind, which comes side-shore or slightly onshore depending on the harbor configuration, offering a water surface protected from large swells. The riding area is in the sheltered bay, with direct access from the sandy beach. Launching is done on the beach or the adjacent grassy area, but be cautious of the reduced space at high tide.

The water surface goes from flat protected by NE wind to chop or small waves with more westerly winds. Prefer high tide to have enough water and avoid exposed areas. The safe zone is in the center of the beach, staying in the harbor to benefit from protection against turbulent winds or wind shadow by going too far in.

With high tide coefficients, the current can intensify in the surrounding channels, so stay vigilant and do not leave the main area. It is a spot that works year-round with a good wind score, but the best months are from April to September for longer sessions.

  • Be cautious of strong currents in the channels during high tide and large coefficients.
  • At low tide, check for exposed areas and potential rocks near the shore.
