Étang de la Justice
France · Île-de-France
The Étang de la Justice, in Grigny, Essonne, is a former extraction site that has become a large urban water body surrounded by parks and walking paths. The water body is part of the group of lakes in Viry-Châtillon and Grigny, interconnected and used for various water activities.
It is a very local spot, frequented mainly by a few motivated riders looking for an option for kitesurfing in inland water near Paris. The atmosphere is rather calm, with many walkers, fishermen on the banks, and a strong presence of birds, especially in autumn and winter.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
You sail on a large relatively clear inland water body, with a generally flat to slightly choppy surface depending on the wind strength. There is no tide here, so the water level remains generally stable, which simplifies reading the water body, but one must deal with the wind direction channeled by buildings and trees around the lake.
With a wind from the SW to W, the water body is generally side-shore to side-on relative to the most accessible launch areas from the banks of Grigny. When the wind shifts more to the S, it becomes more irregular and sometimes side-off on certain shores, with effects of shadow and gusts caused by obstacles on land. Winds from the N and NE often arrive disturbed by urbanization and produce very irregular wind, not pleasant for kiting.
The launch is done from the strips of grass or gravel that line certain banks, but the space to rig and take off is not immense. One must be very diligent in managing the lines, as pedestrian paths, benches, and streetlights are never far away. Takeoff generally occurs in a small cleared grassy area, keeping a safety margin from trees and urban furniture.
On the water, the navigation area is quite wide, but you remain on a closed water body with no escape in case of problems. There is no maritime channel or fast boat traffic, but you may encounter light watercraft depending on the periods, and especially fishermen set up on the banks, whom you must carefully avoid. Coexistence with other users is a real point of attention at this spot.
In autumn and winter, the Étang de la Justice serves as an important resting area for aquatic birds, with sometimes thousands of gulls and terns. This means one must be extra cautious not to disturb the colonies, avoid takeoffs or runs too close to bird gatherings, and accept that some areas of the lake may not be really exploitable for kiting during these periods.
Overall, this is not a 'school' spot nor a holiday spot, but rather a playground for riders already comfortable with managing their kite in an urban environment, with gusty wind and limited space on land. Navigation is done by staying well in the middle of the water body whenever possible, to limit risks related to the immediate proximity of the banks.
