Batz-sur-Mer

The Govelle beach in Batz-sur-Mer, on the wild coast of Loire-Atlantique, is a popular spot for surfers due to its consistent waves and fine sand surrounded by rocks. Located between Batz-sur-Mer and Le Pouliguen, it offers easy access with free parking and proximity to the customs path for a walk after the session.

It is a lively place in season with a surf school on site that offers lessons starting from age 5. The SNSM lifeguards monitor the beach in July and August, making the spot safe for all levels.

At low tide, the rocks attract shore fishermen, but the water remains excellent for swimming and sliding all year round.

The wind data shown here comes from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) over 4 years, reprocessed to reflect realistic conditions.
👉 Average wind has been calibrated to avoid the usual underestimation of models.
👉 Gusts have been corrected by a median ratio to avoid unrealistic extreme values.
👉 Each day is summarized by the median wind (P50) observed during useful hours (8am–8pm), then classified into wind ranges.
👉 The weighted mode mixes average wind and gusts to best reflect felt wind.

  • 🟢 10–16 kts: light but sailable wind (especially on foil).
  • 🟡 16–22 kts: ideal range, comfortable conditions for most.
  • 🔴 22–28 kts: strong wind, reserved for experienced riders.
  • 🟣 28+ kts: extreme conditions, committed riding.

Riding conditions

The Govelle beach is oriented west/southwest, making it ideal for a side-on or side-shore wind coming from the northwest or west, perfect for kitesurfing in surf or freestyle. A direct onshore wind from the west also works well, but avoid pure offshore from the east which makes the water surface too choppy for kite.

Launching is done directly from the fine sand at the center of the beach, with a wide and clear take-off area on the upper part. The navigation area extends in front of the beach for 300-400 meters, but remain vigilant to the rocks on the sides, especially at low tide where they are exposed.

At high tide, the water surface is wider and the waves more consistent, ideal for kite surfing. At low tide, the space shrinks and the northern and southern rocks limit the area, making navigation more technical. Favor mid-rising tide for a good balance. The spot is accessible year-round thanks to its Atlantic exposure, with summer monitoring that provides reassurance.

Ideal wind
S
SW
Wdominant

The ideal conditions are a side-shore wind of 18-25 knots from the northwest or west, at mid-rising tide for a clean water surface and good width for navigation.

Sea state

The state of the water varies with the tide and wind: moderate chop in onshore, cleaner in side-shore. Waves reach 0.5 to 1.5m in good conditions, ideal for kite surfing without being too powerful.

Sea currents

Currents are generally weak on the beach, but they intensify near the rocky points at the ends. The tides are semi-diurnal with a significant coefficient in the Atlantic, greatly altering the navigable area: check the schedules to avoid the holes at low tide.

Recommended kite size

Opt for sizes from 9 to 11m in light to moderate wind, and go down to 7-9m when it exceeds 25 knots. Adjust according to your weight and style, favoring surf kites to take advantage of the small waves.

Weather & wind

The prevailing wind comes from the northwest or west, often steady in the afternoon with strengths of 15-25 knots in season. There is no specific local name, but it follows the classic Atlantic pattern, more consistent from September to April.

Climate

The oceanic climate of Batz-sur-Mer offers mild temperatures year-round, with averages of 8-10°C in winter and 20-25°C in summer. The seasons are marked by hot and dry summers, conducive to long sessions, and mild but rainy winters that do not discourage motivated riders.

Depth

The depth increases gradually from the shore with a predominantly sandy bottom. You can stand up to 30-50 meters depending on the tide, but the rocks nearby require caution.

Water temperature

The water remains cool: 10-13°C in winter, 16-18°C in spring and autumn, and 18-20°C in summer. A 4/3 wetsuit is essential outside the summer season.
