Punta Popy Beach is located in Las Terrenas, in the Samaná Peninsula, on the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic. It is a popular beach with its golden sand, turquoise waters, and palm trees that provide natural shade.
The spot is favored for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, thanks to consistent winds and a lively environment with bars and restaurants along the boardwalk.
Less crowded than other destinations, it attracts locals and tourists in a friendly and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

flatThe Punta Popy Beach spot generally offers a side-shore wind from NE to E, perfect for comfortable navigation along the beach. Launching is done directly from the sand, easily accessible in front of the Afreeka hotel where the Kiteworld school is located. The navigation area is wide, with plenty of room to take off and land the kite safely.
The water surface is often choppy, with small waves suitable for intermediates and advanced riders, but it can become flatter in ideal conditions. Most navigation is downwind towards El Portillo, about 12-15 minutes by car, for extended sessions. Hydrofoils work well here due to the constant side wind.
The thermal wind picks up around 1 PM and remains reliable until the evening. The beach is protected by a bay, making the launch area safe even for supervised beginners.
Ideal conditions are a side-shore NE to E wind of 15-20 knots, with a moderately choppy water surface for jumps and foiling.
The water is clear and shallow near the shore, with a sandy bottom. There is often chop and small waves, perfect for progressing in freestyle or light waves.
No big swells, making the spot accessible even in strong winds.
Currents are generally weak in the protected bay of Punta Popy. However, be cautious near the channels where they can accelerate, especially during low tide.
Tides are moderate, with a range of about 1-2 meters, having no major impact on navigation.
The most commonly used sizes are 9m to 12m, with the 12m in light thermal wind and the 9m in the late afternoon when it picks up.
The northeast trade winds blow from December to August, with thermal winds of 10 to 20 knots that strengthen in the afternoon. The dominant direction is NE to E, side-shore on the southeast-facing beach.
The wind is constant and reliable, ideal for daily sessions almost all year round.
The tropical climate of Las Terrenas offers warm temperatures year-round around 25-30°C. The dry season runs from December to August, with consistent trade winds, while the rainy season from September to November is wetter but still manageable.
The best months for kitesurfing are January, February, March, June, and July, with stable and sunny weather.
The depth is gradual with a clean sandy bottom. You can stand up to 50-100m from the shore, ideal for restarts and beginners.
The water remains warm year-round between 26-29°C, generally without the need for a wetsuit. Slightly cooler in winter at 26°C, perfect for riding in lycra.
