Playa Catalonia Bavaro in Cabeza de Toro is a narrow beach located near Punta Cana, in the province of La Altagracia. It is a kitesurfing spot accessible to all levels thanks to its shallow waters and regular side-onshore wind.
The beach is lined with hotels and attracts many walkers, making the launch a bit technical. There is a flat and shallow water area for nearly a mile before the waves of 1.5 to 2.5 meters.
The spot is popular for its proximity to resorts and its tropical atmosphere, although the traffic from diving boats requires vigilance.
The dominant wind comes from the East, side-onshore relative to the northeast-facing beach, providing stable conditions for navigation. It is a mix of flat and chop with small to medium waves depending on ocean swells, perfect for freeride or light waves.
The navigation area extends for a mile of shallow water before the breaking waves, ideal for beginners who stay close to the shore. Launching is preferably done in the water as the beach is very narrow with many pedestrians; an assisted launch is often necessary depending on the crowd.
No dependence on tides, conditions remain constant. Be cautious of the heavy diving boat traffic that navigates the area, stay vigilant and navigate wide. The takeoff area is small, better to aim for off-peak hours to avoid the crowd.
Ideal conditions with East wind between 15 and 20 knots, side-onshore for optimal control. Perfect for all levels with flat water inside.
Water conditions are shallow, flat to chop with small to medium waves of 1.5 to 2.5 m depending on the swell. Calm water near the shore for nearly a kilometer, ideal for progression.
Currents are generally weak in the shallow area near the beach. No specific information on strong channels, but increased vigilance is required with standard ocean tides.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12 m² on average depending on the rider and conditions of 12-22 knots. Smaller for waves, larger on light days.
The East trade winds and thermal winds dominate, generally blowing between 12 and 22 knots with an average of 15 knots. The wind strengthens in the afternoon due to the thermal, with a constant side-onshore.
Best months: January to December, wind present all year even if weaker than in the north of the island.
The climate is warm tropical year-round with air temperatures around 25-30°C. No need for a wetsuit, but sun protection is essential due to the strong sunlight.
The trade wind season ensures reliable wind from December to September, with few rainy disturbances.
The depth is progressive and shallow with a sandy bottom for nearly a mile. Water up to waist height for a long time, perfect for learning.
Water temperatures are warm year-round, around 26-29°C. No combo needed, shorty optional in the cool season.
