Kite Beach
Dominican Republic · Puerto Plata
The Kite Beach in Cabarete, in the north of the Dominican Republic, is a legendary spot lined with palm trees and lively restaurants. It is part of a vast turquoise bay protected by a reef about 500 meters from the shore, providing a generous and safe sailing area.
Close to the village of Cabarete, accessible by moto-taxi for less than 2 euros, it is a popular place for its consistent wind and friendly Dominican atmosphere. Riders come here for versatile freeriding, with plenty of space available.
In high season, the crowd is dense, but the atmosphere remains relaxed and family-friendly.
Historical averages by month — not a live forecast.
The main wind comes from the northeast to east-northeast trade winds, often onshore from noon and reinforced by thermal effects, creating a choppy water surface in the bay. For beginners and intermediates, the Kite Beach area is wide and separated from the windsurfing area, with easy access directly from the sandy beach.
The launch area is on the vast beach, always lively but well organized. The reef 500 meters out protects the bay, providing a safe space for freeriding, but be cautious of waves that can reach 3 meters on the outer reef in case of swell. For perfect flat conditions, head to La Boca to the east, or for consistent waves, Encuentro to the west, 15 minutes by taxi.
The spot is versatile: freeride in the center, more choppy to the north of Kite Beach with stronger winds, and calmer at Bozo Beach to the south for progression. Never kite alone if you are not self-sufficient, and prefer local schools for supervised rentals.
