The main wind comes from the northeast to east-northeast trade winds, often onshore from noon and reinforced by thermal effects, creating a choppy water surface in the bay. For beginners and intermediates, the Kite Beach area is wide and separated from the windsurfing area, with easy access directly from the sandy beach.
The launch area is on the vast beach, always lively but well organized. The reef 500 meters out protects the bay, providing a safe space for freeriding, but be cautious of waves that can reach 3 meters on the outer reef in case of swell. For perfect flat conditions, head to La Boca to the east, or for consistent waves, Encuentro to the west, 15 minutes by taxi.
The spot is versatile: freeride in the center, more choppy to the north of Kite Beach with stronger winds, and calmer at Bozo Beach to the south for progression. Never kite alone if you are not self-sufficient, and prefer local schools for supervised rentals.
Ideal conditions are a side-on to onshore wind of 18-25 knots from the northeast, for a perfect choppy water surface for freeriding without too many waves.
The water surface varies from flat to choppy in the inner bay, becoming chop with onshore winds, and waves of 1-3m on the outer reef. Significant depth, rare to touch the bottom except near the shore.
Currents are generally weak in the protected bay, but can intensify near the reef or in case of swell. Tides have a moderate impact, with a low amplitude typical of the Caribbean.
Opt for kite sizes of 9 to 12m² on average, smaller sizes like 7-9m² when the wind picks up in the afternoon, and 11-13m² on lighter mornings.
The trade winds dominate with a consistent and steady wind from northeast to east-northeast, average strength of 15-25 knots, stronger in the afternoon due to thermal effects. The pattern is reliable for much of the year, particularly from January to May according to provided data.
The tropical climate of Cabarete offers warm temperatures year-round, around 28-32°C during the day, with water close to 30°C. The trade wind season runs from January to August, ideal for kiting, while winter sometimes brings more pronounced shore break.
The depth is significant from 50m off the shore, with a sandy bottom mixed with corals, you can only stand near the beach. The lagoon is spacious and safe.
The water remains warm year-round around 27-30°C, peaking at 29-30°C in summer, generally no need for a wetsuit.
