Santa Veronica

Located an hour's drive from Cartagena, the small village of Santa Veronica has established itself in recent years as the beating heart of kitesurfing in Colombia. This authentic spot, lined with fishermen's huts and a few discreet eco-lodges, now attracts riders from all over the world for a simple reason: the wind blows almost every day, with exceptional consistency. The main beach, Salinas del Rey, stretches for several kilometers. There is a flat water area protected by a natural reef at low tide, and a more choppy water area at high tide with nice chop and well-formed waves. The place is still preserved from mass tourism, and local life retains a typical Caribbean sweetness: a hammock, a cold beer, the sound of the wind in the palm trees — and that's all you need. It’s no coincidence that the GKA World Tour stops here every year: it’s one of the best playgrounds in South America for freestyle and big air.

Location

Detailed information

The wind blows side-onshore (from the right), making navigation comfortable and safe. The launch is stress-free, on a wide sandy beach. At low tide, the coral barrier creates a vast flat water area perfect for freestyle, while at high tide, the reef allows for regular waves of about 1 to 1.5 m. It’s a complete spot, where you can switch from a technical session on the flat to aerial jumps in the waves a few hours later. The atmosphere on the water is relaxed, without overcrowding, even in high season. Equipment can be left at local schools, which also offer storage, lessons, and sometimes even a small beach bar for breaks between sessions.

Risks & Safety

  • Overall safe spot. The beach is clear, without obstacles or bathers.
  • Presence of rocks and corals near the reef at low tide.
  • At high tide, the beach shrinks, making take-off a bit more technical.
  • Wearing booties can be useful in some rocky areas.
  • In case of drift, you naturally return to the beach thanks to the side-onshore wind.
