Puerto Velero

Located between Barranquilla and Cartagena, Puerto Velero is an iconic spot on the Colombian Caribbean coast, known for its perfect balance of accessibility, comfort, and wind consistency. The site features a large semi-enclosed bay bordered by blonde sand and mangroves. It is easily accessible from the main road, and the spot is close to a small marina and several hotels. Puerto Velero is particularly popular with freeriders and kite schools, as the bay is sheltered, wide, and shallow, providing a reassuring environment for progression. The landscape is less wild than that of Cabo de la Vela, but the ease of access, quality of the wind, and proximity to large cities make this spot an excellent base for a kite trip balanced between sessions, relaxation, and local life.

Location

Detailed information

The bay of Puerto Velero forms a huge expanse of calm water protected by a sand point. The wind blows side-onshore (from the right), making sailing very safe. The water is flat over most of the inner water area, and a slight chop appears further out. At high tide, the water level rises quickly but remains navigable for all levels. Beginners have a clear space, free of obstacles, and advanced riders can head outside the bay to seek more sporty conditions. The wind is often a bit less strong than at Salinas del Rey, but more consistent in direction, providing long, stable, and enjoyable sessions.

Risks & Safety

  • Very safe spot in the bay, suitable for all levels.
  • Outside the bay, the wind becomes more irregular and the swell more present.
  • Some isolated rocks near the marina (clearly visible at low tide).
  • Be cautious of small motorboats navigating at the end of the day.
  • The local schools ensure good supervision of the water area.
